This took longer than I really wanted it to, and it feels like I haven't actually done much... but there were some real-life inconveniences that happened this week that messed with my sleeping, then I've spent a lot of time trying to figure out a good solution for jiggling.
One of the most annoying problems with physics simulations is that they're very... unpredictable, especially under certain conditions which is annoyingly like... every single damn time I use them >_> so here's a test I did to see how it looked earlier.
Not good- there's a lot of settings that do different things in Blender's softbody's physics, and I'm still not sure how exactly what does what. I have a vague idea, but how I tweak something is never exactly how I think it would affect the sim. After a lot of messing around, I *eventually* arrived something okay:
It still looks weird in some parts, but one thing I learned in the bronto/raptor animation is that, when the sim gets too crazy, you can simply keyframe the strength of the mesh's surface deform modifier kind of... ease out the bad spots.
There are surface deform modifiers for the left/right thighs, the tummy and the butt, each of the physics objects that make the jiggling happen:
And... each of which had to their strength turned WAY down when the dragon jumps and turns! But the final result has that jiggly, secondary motion without the awful physics freak outs.
I wanted to add jiggles to more of the body, like the arms, but at this point, I'm sick of messing with soft bodies... and I don't think it would be terribly noticeable anyway.
One approach I explored that *kind of* worked, but wasn't as effective it turns out, was using the bone-dynamics add-on to use bones that respond to physics to get jiggling.
This works okay, but still had the same problems as the physics when it comes to extreme motions. But it also doesn't have the same kind of "realism" soft bodies have, so it seemed like a step down from using softbodies. However, it would be useful perhaps to jiggle parts such as the arms or sides of the body.
The more interesting parts are the foley stuff. I tried to create an audio experience that really places the character in the environment. To do this, I tried to make dragon claw scrapes across tiled floor by taping mechanical pencils to my index, middle and ring fingers, then tapping, scratching and moving my hand across my bathroom floor.
I also jumped up, turned out, that sort of thing, to get the thuds/thumps for when he jumps and turns in the animation.
To get the subtle sound of a silicon shaft smacking a butt, I took one of my bad dragons and slapped it on my hand. I did this wet and dry, as this produces different sounds!
To get the occasional skin rusting sound, I simple recorded by hand rubbing my forearm.
Finally, I recorded another session of me using one of my penetrable toys to get more squish/glurg/sshps sounds (and also, to get a more "internal" sound, like something moving in and out of a wet meat hole).
I've attached an audio sample that has some bits from the full recordings for each.
And, I've attached a preview with most of the sound, though it's still missing a few things (the 2nd voice that I still haven't settled on how it'll sound yet >_> as well as some more lewd sounds here and there)
I would really have liked to have been rendering the final frames today (as well as have had the sound all the way finished), as opposed to just finishing up the animation part, and still needed to do some more sound work, but this should be done very soon... I despise that, I keep doing soft bodies, but I also have to like... figure out the magic numbers each time because each case is a bit different.
Thank you for being patient with me!
Also, the sound levels might be weird so please let me know if you think the audio is weird (like, is the music/voice/sound effects too loud?)
A patron mentioned that the voice was too loud in the bronto/raptor animation. That was the first bit of feedback for the sound, but the only one about the voice volume. But is it too loud and no one has told me? To me it sounds okay, but I've been messing with the audio so long that fresh ears might think it's all out of whack. So, please do let me know what you think of the voice/sound effect/music balance!
