So I was studying my page a bit and found this option. It seems neat, but for some reason Patreon makes it permanent once I enable it, making it so that I can't cancel it if I don't like it.

So I'm here asking you guys. Should I use it or not? Like, there will be some convenient things for myself, like preventing people from pledging then leaving before the time to pay happens and taking the patron-only work I throw up for you guys. Thankfully, It doesn't affect the people already pledging, since they're already pledged, unless they delete their pledge and want to come back for some reason.

However, if I do make put it into effect, new pledgers will be asked to pay just to become a patron then have their pledge be asked for again at the beginning of a new month for said rewards, effectively making them pay double for their rewards and that part kinda seems mean.

So yeah. It's kinda crappy that they make it a permanent change as soon as I enable it, but I am interested. Please, let me know your thoughts on this...

I say go for it.

Not gonna lie, the fact that you cared enough to ask means you care for your patrons, which is good. I can’t really speak for all of us, but for me at least, as someone here to support you (with the bonus of some rad Neo art), I’d be okay with it.

Hmm.... that's tricky. Its really up to you and what you think is best. Personally, I wouldn't activate it, since you don't have previous works up for download. I would say if you do activate it, you can do a compensation, like give new comers last month's rewards for the first payment, then give them next month's rewards for the next payment. But really its up to you.

cslucaris

Damn, that's a good idea. If I activate it this month, I'll throw new pledgers June's Rewards and they'll be eligible for July's stuff. Nice!

Yayuiri

so basicly we paid at the beggning of the month instead at the end (wich doesn't change much)?

Much as I appreciate the request for input, you're never going to please everyone, and it's important for you to protect your work from those who would take advantage. Content creators seem to get stiffed a lot, and if you can stifle that even a little by switching your payment scheme, I'm all for it.

Rantam

I'd say yeah, just with a warning about it on your homepage. Also, I feel I have to apologize, I didn't realize you weren't upfront with payments. I may have been one of the people who leaves constantly, sorry.

Nexus9

I don’t think it means they’re going to pay double every month, just for the first time they pledge and then it’s the regular pledge amount they picked after at the start of each new month.

Agent Snowman

I agree with everyone's thoughts on this so far. While it does suck for those who are new going into the month about half way, I say that it's making the best of a sticky situation. Like you said it prevents ppl from doing payment skips and downloading all the content. But like everyone else has said thus far it's up to you. If nothing else you put it up to a poll if you really want to but me personally it doesn't affect me

BarricadeSkywalker

I think that paying up front is a great thing, and I have no idea why Patreon didn't just do it that way from the start.

Nathan Green

Well when it comes down to brass tacks (Whatever that means), Its your Patreon dude and let me tell you as a sucker who upgrades to the highest patron level every time you add one. I believe that even if you changed the way that people pay, they'd still do it regardless. I mean how i joined is that i saw one of the Blake ones you did a while back, and after showing my friends i pretty much thought "Damn! this dude deserves this", so i made an account and here we are. Apologies for the length but its like the old saying "You pay for what you get", and i'll admit i'm gonna constantly pester for Blake or Ann stuff, but i'm gonna stay as a Patron. Because i believe that your a brilliant artist who deserves it, and just because people have to pay up front i can't see that warding them off as they'll probably have already seen your work and come to the same conclusion as me. Apologies again for length

Xaq

I don't see any reason why new patrons would complain about paying upfront unless they're the dine-and-dash sorts you're seeking to avoid. I say go for it.

I personally think you should activate it, too many patreon users will "pledge," download all the art they can find, and unpledge before a month has even passed, then share it about wherever they choose.

Mister Eiffel

Well, look at it this way; your pledge gets charged at the first of the month, so it kinda makes sense to pay for the current month you are pledging since you do have access to some patreon only content. Of course, it's a bit hard to ignore the fact that your rewards are via message only, so new patrons can't really access much, but I would argue that it's a different problem altogether.

cslucaris

The thing that someone brought up is that if this system is implemented, then any new pledgers will receive the the previous month's rewards along with the current months. For example, If I start it now, new pledgers will get June's rewards along with July's if they stay on until August 1st and their payment gets processed then. For current patrons, this system changes nothing. It's just new patrons that are affected.

I think that sounds like a good idea overall. It would also give people an incentive to join since they wouldn't have to worry about losing a month worth of rewards. Plus, you don't have to worry about faux patrons that way. Hell, it could draw even more people to pledge since they get something immediate for paying right away

Markgonaut

Upfront for me. :)

Just be transparent and upfront about this extra transaction to all potential pledges.
