What a wonderful surprise. I joined for LOTR and now you give me MCU, too. Knowing your penchant for hyper-analysis, it will be a fascinating journey to share.

Listen guys, I’ll keep subscribing up through Endgame, but you gotta do more than one reaction every month and a half or it’s gonna take you five years to get through all these films. Also, as previously mentioned, continue doing them in release order. Otherwise you will get spoiled sometimes.

They did build a suit for this film.

Welcome to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)! I joined your Patreon because I love the overly in-depth analysis you guys give on movies. I was surprised about your choice to react to Marvel movies, because they don’t always lend themselves to that type of serious deep discussion for most people. Some MCU movies touch on serious themes, and some are simple lighthearted comedies. And there is criticism that they are TOO comedic at times. But you guys are good at finding hidden meaning and symbolism in anything you watch so it will be interesting to see your reactions. Below are my notes that I took along with you. — After 15 years, this first Iron Man movie is still up there in the top 3 for me. Not just because it started it all. It just feels so realistic, it barely feels like a comic book movie. And it didn’t feel like it was trying to set up a larger universe (yet). There’s something special about a Marvel movie that can stand on its own, without the weight of having to add to the larger/connected story. Later on in the MCU journey, I feel like everyone is focused on how everything connects. — The use of CGI - for me, the suit is absolute PEAK in this movie and it’s definitely my favorite. Especially after seeing it for the first time in SO LONG. It looks 100x better than movies made 10 years later. There was a rapid improvement in CGI technology in the 2000s and we reached a peak in 2008 where everything started to look real. But there was also this great synergy of using CGI combined with practical effects which led to some incredible shots that we see in this movie. They actually did create a FULL Iron Man suit, but actor Robert Downey Jr was so uncomfortable that they recreated the entire suit in CGI. The final movie is a perfect mix of practical shots of him wearing a real suit (or parts of a real suit) mixed with full CGI. In later movies, the Iron Man suit is 100% CGI and the difference is very noticeable. And not just with Iron Man. I’m curious to see your thoughts on the CGI as you progress forward, because I feel like the movies become more and more dependent on it. — In the MCU they do not have a “no-killing-rule” so just come to terms with that now lol. Mostly all of our Marvel heroes will have a very high kill count by the time you guys catch up lol. I actually think it makes things easier from a storytelling perspective. Sometimes it’s easier to just kill the bad guys 😂 AND when you make a rule like that but then indirectly cause a bunch of deaths, it becomes hard to explain away (cough cough Batman cough). — Keep a lookout for the Stan Lee cameo in EVERY MCU movie, it’s fun when you guys point him out. — Also check for a mid credits scene and/or a post credits scene for every MCU movie. Not every movie has both, but all movies have at least one. — I agree and LOVE the chemistry between Pepper and Tony. Pepper is definitely on his same level and can keep up with his witty banter without getting offended. They are both fantastic actors. — The rooftop scene where they almost kiss - I have to agree with Gabriella. Pepper was leaning in hard while Tony just held back completely. I feel like he hesitated because he truly cares about her and doesn’t want to make her feel like all of those other women. — The big ring you asked about on the villain’s hand is a reference to the terrorist organization he works for - The Ten Rings. — The actor who plays Tony’s BFF Rhodey gets replaced in the next movie for the rest of the MCU. After 15 years, I still prefer the original actor. They have such a fantastic chemistry in this movie that I personally have never felt again. Curious on your opinion after seeing a few movies with the new Rhodey. — I’m glad Gabriella came to love Agent Phil Coulson by the end! I was laughing when she found him annoying. I knew she’d like him eventually. You will see a lot more of him and SHIELD. — The scene where Iron Man first arrives to save that small town in the Middle East. I completely agree with Caley - it’s crazy to think how so many people in the world wake up every day in a country that is actively in war. Or to live every day with people and buildings just exploding around you. Not knowing whether or not a bomb is going to end your life that day. That’s everyday life for some people. I couldn’t even imagine. We take life for granted living in a free country like America. — @Caley - The term you were thinking about towards the end is “Origin Story”, and yes, get ready for LOTS of origin stories. For me, the origin stories are some of the best of the MCU. Some of the sequels for individual heroes just decline in quality in my opinion. But the characters keep growing, and the team-ups are amazing to look forward to.

We're planning to watch/react to at least one Marvel movie a week, that way we can react to other genres of movies too at the same time (and finish up some trilogies we started) Although just based off Iron Man I would love to watch all the movies in one go haha - Gabi

Not sure if you also like Harry Potter and Star Wars too, but we have those planned to do in these next 3 months before the year ends since a lot of people have recommended them. I'm genuinely so excited to experience MCU movies. Plus very impatient to watch the last installment of LOTR and find out if Frodo will be able to destroy the ring & if Gollum/Smeagol will betray him! - Gabi
