Hi!
This is something that's been causing me a lot of trouble...

I made the mistake of promising 2160x2160 renders for patrons (instead of 1080x1080 like I usually do for DeviantArt)

That's 2x more resolution.

Unfortunately, now that I've been working with such high resolutions, I realize that it's just too much for my computer. Render times are EXTREMELY slow (not 2x slower, but 4x slower, because if you do the math, 2160 pixels is the same as FOUR images at 1080 pixels, therefore, 4 times slower renders!)

And it's been very unstable for my CPU, I've had crashes multiple times, including BSODs (which is one of the most frustrating things ever) it slows me down a lot, and I end up actually making LESS content for the comic for the sake of saving some time!  (and definitely less "Bonus pages")

There's also the problem that textures simply wont look good at such high resolutions. I've been doing my best with Photoshop, but Opal's textures weren't made for such high resolution images...

Renders are 4 times slower... Add to that my instable CPU that eventually crashes, and me trying my absolute best to improve textures using Photoshop! And you'll realize that this suddently turned into a helish hobby! (specially because I don't want to disapoint anyone!)

It was my fault to promise such high resolution textures... I thought I could handle it a bit better, but this has become WAY more time consuming than before... If I could simply decrease the higher resolution versions to something like 1500pixels, it would make me a HUGE difference! (It's the perfect balance of quality and time!)

Wouldn't it be better if I decreased the resolution to 1500? (This is still higher than Deviantart's version, which is 1080) That way I could focus more on actually creating more content, instead of dealing with all the problems I just described above! (everything feels forced now)

I also thought about decreasing the price, but... I feel like all the bonus content is worth a lot more than the extra resolution...

But you're free to disagree! (and even choose a lower tier, if all you wanted was the 2160 resolution version!)

(Whoever, I'll drop the price from the $4 tier to $3,... it's that tier whith higher resolution images but no bonus content, and no one seems to be using that tier at the moment anyway....)

NOTE: I'll finish Opal's comic at the promised 2160 pixel resolution! This will only apply to any future comics!

Let me know what you think! I honestly feel awful for making this change, but I spent the last days trying my best to optimize rendertimes and thinking about alternative solutions.... Hopelessly..... It would be much easier to just say the truth and ask for your feedback on this...

So please comment something! Otherwise I'll assume everyone is mad! :/

(I finally finished RENDERING the next 10 pages plus a few extra shots. The next step is to fix everything with Photoshop. I believe I'll have the next ZIP ready in the next 5 days)

I'd be happy with more renders than higher resolution. Eventually, you might be able to make enough from the patreon to upgrade your computer, and then you can pursue higher quality renders without so many problems. But for now, I think it's a smart decision.

Thank you! And yes, I'm also hopping to upgrade my computer in the future... buying new graphics cards and switching my renderer software to a GPU renderer would speed things up quite a lot! (Currently I'm using a CPU renderer... It's slower and pretty much heavier on the system)

Don't worry about the quality ;) I think everyone is far more in love with the content then having it look crazy high resolution. So yeah, if you need to go 1500, do it :)

ashkiiwolf

Thank you! And yes, a huge part of my delay comes from the trouble I've had with those resolutions... And I believe the crashes could have something to do with the overclock (which I deactivated.... But guess what... Now the renders are EVEN SLOWER as expected...) X3 I'm glad to know this isn't a big deal! And I promised 2160 pixel renders because I've been able to to them before.... However, I rendered something MUCH SIMPLER. And that makes all the difference! When you had more things to the comic (complex geometry and more people!) It just slows down the render even more...

I approve of this message! :)

Since I "just" have the 2$ Tier, I'm not really concerned but before you crash your computer, you should settle for a lesser resolution. In the end you'll get more done and everyone gets their pictures earlier - and I can't really imagine that the difference is that different to spot. So in my honest opinion: Take it easy and take the lower resolution. I don't think anyone is mad about that.

ashkiiwolf

Exactly! I'll either keep the 2160 with constant problems, slowdowns, and complete frustration (and end up trying to upload stuff in a rush!) Or simply decrease it to 1500 pixels and keep myself inspired and focused on my art... Thank you! ;)

Nothing to worry about here! Like others said before, I think this is a smart decision, and we'll all be happy with more renders at a time. As long as you keep doing what you're doing, myself, and others here will gladly support you.

I don't think I can add anything new to what the majority had said. Lower the resolution!

ashkiiwolf

Thank you, you're all making my next uploads way less painful for me! X3

Cool

This is your art my man! You do what you think will be best for it. Excited to see what's next,

ashkiiwolf

Thank you! ^^ This problem was indeed, getting in the way of focusing on the art :S

Keep on going we will follow your lead

ashkiiwolf

Ah ah XD Thanks =P And guess what... I'm finishing the newest ZIP! It's gonna take me just a few more minutes now! ;)
