The numbers get higher when they get closer to the goal, not lower. Closer to zero = Mayuri dies and SERN wins sooner. Closer to one = Mayuri dies later. Greater than one, in theory, will be when they've moved time far enough that all the constant events don't happen at all anymore. And the numbers are changing- they got lower with every d-mail and are getting higher with every undone d-mail.

I love how these last two episodes make for a little breather where the emotional stakes are high but the actual objective (undoing their friends' d-mails) isn't particularly dangerous or complicated. A nice interlude. But if you've been paying attention to the order of mails and their senders, you should already know that the next one (the last needed to get the IBM back) is a different story.
