The school scenes are there to show how Britanian's are shielded from the atrocities of war. There are essentially two realities taking place in the same country, one that the Japanese live in and Britanian's live in the other.

In the US we experience this duality of realities, considering that we are still at war in Iraq yet most American Citizens have kind of forgotten about that conflict and don't even think about it ever in their day to day.
