This is not a spoiler, just a clarification: Lelouch is Britannian but lives in Japan. Kururugi (the friend) is Japanese but serves the Britannian army as an "honorary Britannian" which is a title given to Japanese who chooses to serve the Empire.

I think episode 4 will really get you hooked into the show. Also, the next episode should clear up a few things.
