fun little detail: Eren is so confused, when they call the beast titan a monkey, because he doesn't actually know what a monkey is. There are no monkeys inside the walls, so anyone knowing about them would have to be from outside.

No. Ymir says monkey at first but when Eren doesn't understand her she says "that monkey beast titan" . So she wasn't trying to keep information from Eren.
