@Kaycee bell The OVAs are good, but it might be better to watch after season 2. Ilse's notebook makes a bit more sense after watching season 2.

Something you might not have noticed is that the patch that Levi gives to the soldier isn't Ivan's (when could Levi have cut Ivan's patch out?) It's actually Petra's patch and he lied and said it was Ivan's to comfort the soldier, I think that says a lot about his character. He lost the body of the girl who he loved to cover up the mistake of the guy and then still gives the patch - the last thing he has to remember Petra by - to the guy to comfort him.
