CHAPTER 1 “The Grind”

Yet another day of streaming for Pokimane, playing her goto game League of Legends. This is her 38th daily stream in a row without missing a day, she is extremely passionate about streaming and growing her audience of which while very little at the moment, averaging at about 7 viewers a stream, still loves interacting with them. But Poki is starting to get stressed and it’s showing on stream, she’s behind on bills, barely able to afford rent. She silently questions herself while streaming if streaming is really worth it financially but it is her passion so she is willing to put the work in, in order to make it a success however necessary.

Poki celebrates with a happy scream as she wins her third game of League in a row, her twitch chat getting excited, spamming emotes of PogChamp; Her stream gains a little traction now averaging at 23 viewers, people are starting to discover her natural talent for streaming. This is her best performing stream yet.

During her fourth game she receives her first ever donation from one of the new viewers who came in from the increase of viewers, the donation of $9.99 USD reads: “You need to stop screaming gal, gonna wake my neighbours!” from Anonymous user. Poki screams, again, thanking the donor for donating, celebrating her first ever donation, her stream is actually starting to make money now.

“YESSSS” Poki screams, winning her fourth game, a 4 win streak. Her celebrations are only increased when she receives yet another donation, this time of $50.00 USD reading: “What did I just say about the screaming? You need to tape that mouth of yours.” again from Anonymous user. Poki repeatedly thanks the donor for donating such a large amount, she can’t believe it herself, with this money she can pay the rest of her water bill and would only have the electricity bill due, which is high due to streaming so much using her computer all the time. “You know what, mr. anonymous, I will do just that, just for you since you donated so much” Poki responds to the donation after nearly crying in happiness. “Be right back stream, I’m going to find some duct tape.” she said in her cute voice.

The stream is presented with a “Be right back” screen with music playing, her webcam hidden from view at this moment. It displays a live view of her stream chat as well which is going lightning fast as excitement increases, more people discovering the stream and joining, Poki would return to 51 viewers.

After about 5 minutes of elevator music, A transition is played as it switches from the “Be right back” screen to her full screen webcam screen, where everyone can see that she has taped her mouth shut with a long horizontal piece of heavy duty duct tape with the words “Anonymous” written on top of the tape as a way to display her gratitude towards the donor. “Mmmhm!” She greets the stream as she has returned. “Mm mmmh mmph!” Poki trying to say “oh my god” as she notices her viewer count. Her chat explodes with reactions to her taped mouth on stream, multiple viewers saying “This is the best stream ever”.

“Mm- mmomm mimph mommph moo mmmamph mmammmphmo mmm” Poki mumbles, giggling, trying to say that she is going to play another game of League. “Hmhmmhh mm” Poki mumbles, the entire chat trying to guess what she is saying, Poki giggles into her taped mouth at the responses of what people think she is trying to say.

“MMMMMMMM!!” Poki squeals into the duct tape in response to yet another donation from Anonymous user, this time with the life changing amount of $300.00 USD reading “What a good girl, you taped your mouth. Keep it taped for the rest of the stream and I’ll donate again.”, Poki quits her game of League not even caring about the win-streak and thanks the donor, looking directly into the camera with her eyes putting her hands together like a prayer “Mamm moomph mo mmmph”, Poki would now be able to afford all of her bills meanwhile having money left over, her dream of becoming a streamer is coming true. She cries on stream, constantly thanking everyone for being there the best she can with her mouth taped.

Pokimane decies to just chat with her stream for the rest of the night, of course chatting meaning, mmphing for the rest of the night while her chat tries to guess what she is saying. It quickly turns into a game of “Guess what I’m saying.”, and would soon become a thing she does every stream once she realizes how many viewers she has now since she taped her mouth… 324 viewers.

Chat flying by faster than ever, Poki can barely keep up with the speed of the chat. Poki getting regular donations with amounts between $5 - $20, this is the most successful moment in Poki’s life.

After 8 more hours of streaming with her mouth taped, Poki eventually gets really tired and decides she is going to end the stream there. She says “mamph moo mmph mmo mmphin mm mmmphh hmm mmm mmhm mph hmmmm mommph mmm mhmmph” then proceeds to type in her own chat to explain what she was saying “Thank you all so much for watching, it means the world to me <3 It’s really late here and I am going to go to sleep, I will be on tomorrow! See you <3 <3”. Everyone in the chat wishes her a good night sleep, and says goodbye. Just before ending, Poki receives her final donation of the night “Here you go as promised for being a good girl. Before you go, why don’t you tape that cute nose of yours as well for a minute before you take the tape off.” the donation of $500.00 USD from Anonymous read. Poki’s eyes widened to complete shock at the amount of money that was just sent to her, “Mmm mmm mmmph”. Poki makes a heart symbol with her hands on her chest and blows taped kisses to the camera before waving goodbye and ending the stream.

Stream is now Offline, the Anonymous donor now mad that she didn’t tape her nose like he told her to.
