There was therapy back then too but I think the big thing was that everyone knew there was child abuse and tough families but this was the first time when society was like, maybe we should start calling it out. Drunk, abusive parents, overly tough corporal punishment from your parents, getting smacked around, happened through generations but people finally got tired of it.

For another beautiful, heart wrenching , powerful Robin Williams performance, I highly recommend The Fisher King (also starring Jeff Bridges and has a cameo by Michael Jeter (the death row inmate in Green Mile who trains Mr. Jingles). It’s a dark movie but of the many, many films of Robin Williams, after GWH, it’s maybe my next favorite.
