Fun rewatch, hadn’t seen it since I was a kid in the 80s. This movie is an amalgamation (with changes) of the first two books in the Prydain Chronicles. The Horned King in the books is actually the champion warrior of the big bad which has very noticeable Sauron vibes. The series was written in the 1960s by Lloyd Alexander and was my favorite set of novels growing up (not as well written or detailed as other fantasy like Lord of the Rings but as a coming of age set of stories it connected with me a great deal and is a quick, enjoyable and easy read). Thanks to this, I’m charging up the Kindle to reread the series this week. Glad you enjoyed the animation. As for the background smoke effects it looked more like real smoke FX composited into the animation to me but I’m purely speculating.
