I don’t know this for fact but considering the author was born in 1972, I feel fairly confident the focal decade being the 80s stems from his nostalgia. This is likely also true for why the 80s and 90s are the predominant nostalgia decades right now as writers and filmmakers are more likely to tap into their personal feels and knowledge. Being born in ‘77, I also think those decades are just more fun but there’s a clear bias. 🙂

In the book it was a Blade Runner scene, but apparently they weren’t able to get the rights. However, not only are the film rights to The Shining held by Warner Bros, but Spielberg still maintains a close relationship with Kubrick’s widow Christiane and Jan Harlan (Kubrick’s BIL and a producer on The Shining). It also helped that WB also produced Ready Player One.😊

Also, the sets for The Shining were not rebuilt. They were 100% CG. The twin girls were actresses approximately the same size, wearing facial markers for matching using digital face replacement (in behind the scenes footage you can see the young actresses wearing the facial markers). I’m assuming the woman in room 237 used a similar method.
