A Bridge too Far is the movie you are thinking of that has half the famous British actors at the time. Patton is another very tank heavy and very goof WW2 movie. The actors in this were cast specifically for their resemblance to their real life counterparts. You see so many famous faces pop up but they were all unknown actors at this point.

A majority of the stuff in the series actually happened. It was all put together from actual first hand accounts. The author of the book was a history professor at Tulane, Stephen Ambrose. He happened to live next door to one of the guys (I won't tell you who since you are not done watching the series), and hearing stories from his neighbor inspired Ambrose to do the book. Also a lot of the guys were still alive when the screenplay was written and the movie filmed. The screenwriter spent several months at the home of one of the Vets writing the screenplay with the help of that Vet and that Vet had final approval. Several of the Vets were flown in for the filming and advised, etc. One of the Vets is an extra for the Holland Eindhoven screen. Tom Hanks is also in a back ground scene in on the of episodes towards the end also. A lot of the Actors still had Vets who they portrayed to consult with. Apparently the 80 something year old Vets who were on the sets when filming would go out drinking at night with the actors and would end up drinking all the actors under the table. Lot of funny stories. After you finish episode 10 you need to watch the documentary about Easy Company called "We Stand Alone Together". It is where the interviews with the Vets are from at the beginning of each episode. It is a great documentary and all of the Vets who were still alive tell all the stories, there is actual footage of them in the war, etc.
