So this miniseries is actually very accurate. Of course some things were dramatized for entertainment value but for the most part, the facts and what you're seeing is how it went down. To answer some of your questions: they're washing the car (and many other things) to minimize radiation collected from the fallout (the particulate and debris that is coming from the core and fire). I know you guys were thinking professor Legozov was lying to the woman but he knew that he had to be extremely careful about what he was shared. He was under scrutiny and knew anyone around him could be KGB. He could be blamed for causing panic if he is too honest with strangers especially if he had no authority. Also, he chose a different cup because it was turned upside down, drying off. It was more freshly washed from any unseen fallout.

If you aren't already aware, Craig Mazin was Writer and Showrunner for this. He was a screenwriter before, for film, but Showrunner gets to be Head Writer and Head Producer for a show. Most TV shows operate with a writers' room, but Craig wrote every episode of Chernobyl himself, and then went on to lead the production. I know the girls reacted to The Last of Us. That was also Craig Mazin's baby (Showrunner and writing in conjunction with the original Writer of the game, Neil Druckmann).
