Speaking about the Sonic movies, one thing that makes me rank them over the Mario movie we got is that, for all of the Mario movie's strong, almost religious respect for its source material, I think the main emotional journey/arcs are much better in the Sonic movies. There's more care put into their scripts than in Mario's case, both when it comes to the focus on the emotional throughline (which is way more present) and the cleverness/creativity of the dialogue. There's a super kinetic energy to Mario but I prefer the approach of Sonic who lets his character moments breath much more and be more present.
