I've seen this movie a few times now. While many aspects are undeniably done well, one thing that baffles me about it is how much the bad guys feel like underdogs by the time the climax comes. (And yes, the book had a similar issue.) Generally the heroes are supposed to feel outmatched, so the audience is really concerned for them when the final boss battle happens. But Abra had been supremely confident at every turn, and even bested Rose in their one head-to-head psychic confrontation. (Arguably, she even beat her twice, if you consider the supermarket.) This would be like in Rocky IV, if before the big fight at the end, there had been a preliminary fight between Rocky and Ivan Drago, and Rocky had kicked Ivan's ass.
