Tarantino is very keen on the idea, that the real movie, is not what is on the screen, but the relationship between the viewer and the story. When you fill in blanks yourself, or if you see a theme that’s was not necessarily planned by the filmmaker, it’s just as real to you, as if it was intended. He frequently alludes to this, like in the reservoir dogs opening when they talk about what Madonna’s “like a virgin” really is about, or when the nazi officer guesses that the story of King Kong represents the experience of the black slave in America, while playing the drinking game in inglorious basterds. I personally view pulp fiction as the audiences introduction to his way of thinking. You can take the story however you want, and it has different meanings for every new theme you give it. It can be about under-and overestimating audiences intellect, from a storytellers perspective, it can be about faith and what ideas you place your trust in, the unaccountability of chance and how little say, you actually have in life. I believe this is showcased by the briefcase, and that you never get a definitive answer as to what is inside it. The point is, that the story you took away, is the real story. No matter, it’s a very fun exercise to embrace that idea, when watching his movies
