This is one of my favourite episodes, for precisely the same reason. Sokka is a crucial member of the team, and having an episode to celebrate that and give him some credit where credit is due was so necessary. It is one of the reasons why this show is among the best television of all time. His black blade is made from the falling star from the beginning of the episode (it's a meteorite blade), I just wasn't sure you caught that detail. It truly is a sword unlike any others, because no one else in recent history would have seen a falling star and thought to themselves: Yeah, let me make my sword from this! Sokka though... of COURSE Sokka would go there.

I definitely think Sokka is a valuable member of the group. Just like the others, he has strengths and weaknesses. However, I never really felt like he was treated like he was useless. Others might disagree with him or point out his weaknesses, but I don't think that they are discounting all that he has contributed. The only thing that stood out to me was in the Chase episode where Toph was discounting his ability since he wasn't a bender, but Toph hadn't gotten a chance to know him, so it was probably a generalization of non-benders. However, I do think there have been plenty of times throughout the show that have shown that Aang, Katara, and Toph will follow his lead and look to him for ideas. They do all banter around with each other, and maybe as a fan of Sokka, things said about him are taken more seriously than things said about others. After all, most of their plans, including the invasion plan, are Sokka's plans, so at the very least they'll follow his lead.
