I'm not going to defend Aang's decisions this episode, but I can see where he's coming from. Aang's had problems with failure in the past and the failure at Ba Sing Se was a pretty big one. In the Book 1 episode called the Storm, you get to see how Aang felt like he abandoned the world when he disappeared 100 years before and how there might not have been a 100 year war if he had stayed. In the third episode of Book 2, when they see that Omashu has been captured by the Fire Nation, Sokka says that Ba Sing Se is the only "great Earth Kingdom stronghold" left. So has the war ended? Not exactly. But there aren't any major Earth Kingdom cities left that haven't fallen to the Fire Nation and Ba Sing Se was the capital of the Earth, so losing Ba Sing Se is a major loss. So not only did they lose the Earth Kingdom capital, but everyone thinks he's dead again. And as we learned at the start of Book 2, if the Avatar dies in the Avatar state, the Avatar cycle is broken. So to the world it will seem like the Avatar is gone and has abandoned the world. All of this to say that these big failures do weigh on Aang and it is nice to see that these things do have an affect on him, even if it does mean that he makes decisions that we don't agree with.
