It makes sense that this feels like a fairytale to you because the movie is actually based on a Danish fairytale written in the early 1800s by Hans Christian Anderson. It's pretty similar but the original story has a much MUCH darker ending. To put it mildly, no happily ever after.

I haven't watched this movie in so long and there is just something about renaissance Disney that is just pure magic....I can't quite put my finger on it...maybe it was the type of animation or the 'acting' but everything feels more alive? There is a real sense of performance like you get in the theatre. I just watched 'The Princess and the Frog' along with you and it has a really great message but for me there was something missing. I think it felt too realistic at times...I put that movie along with 'Hunchback of Notre Dame' or 'All Dogs go to Heaven' where they really touch on real life stuff....great message but I can't rewatch it as often because I like to watch animation where I can escape....so I'm glad 'Aladdin' is coming up...I hope 'Mulan' and 'Hercules' will get a chance at some point...I think you'll enjoy them as well :))

I will say Eric was definitely super ride or die for a girl he only rescently met. He took one look at a giant, evil, octopus, sorcerer & went 'I'll stab her with a boat' & then he did lol.
