i loved watching your reaction to this episode! i totally agree with you guys about the dependency between alina & mal. i think a huge reasoning for why alina decides to erase her scar so suddenly is a culmination of a few things: she thinks mal is ignoring her letters/choosing not to respond to her out of fear/anger of what she is (at this point it's been like a month since she hasn't heard from him), and baghra put it into her head that mal might not care about her in the same way that she cares about him ("you had plans, perhaps he never did because where is he now?") which then leads her to have that moment of all those flashbacks except each is seen through a different lens kind of? like the hesitation when young mal answers with "okay... together..." and the scene of them holding hands in the meadow is reversed so that mal lets go of her hand, and then the scene where mal turns away from their almost-kiss. i definitely think she was having one of those false epiphanies where you question your own memories like, "have i been reading too much into our relationship? am i a burden to this person? did they ever even want me around?" which is a clear sign of alina's insecurities unfortunately. i do think this was necessary for her moving forward with her powers, but i don't think it was done for the right reasons if that makes sense, which kind of seems to me that it won't hold the same weight it would if she had done it out of her desire to grow as a person. super excited to see your reaction to episode five, lot's of awesome twists coming your way!

So, without spoiling things, Nina's storyline is really just setting up her character for season 2. They basically decided to take her backstory and put it into season 1 so we'd already know her going into season 2.

Also, the more a Grisha uses their power, the healthier they are. It's good for them to let it out. They weren't really able to show this, but in the books, prior to coming to the Little Palace, Alina barely ate, she appeared a bit sickly and pale and never had much energy. Holding her power in made her weaker. Once she begins using her power regularly, she becomes healthy and more vibrant.

I agree with the dependency between Mal and Alina to a certain extent. I feel like it's more heighten because they were separated in such an extreme way and Mal thinks that Alina is not safe. Because as we see in the flash backs in this and the first episode i believe, they did get separated a lot because of their rank etc. Alina was a mapmaker and Mal was a soldier. I'm pretty sure they were not as desperate to get to each other before all this happened. After Alina was reviled as the sun summener and taken away, i feel like the dependency went from a normal amount to like a 100%. I do think that they were more dependent on each other when they were younger. But as they both grew up and had to be apart because of a war, they had to grow and become their own person separate from each other. I think that both of them wouldn't be this desperate to get to each other if they were getting the letters.
