Benedict Cumberbatch voices both Smaug and Sauron. Love them improving on the fire version of Sauron to show his original physical form in the middle of the fire.

The extended edition has a chanced plotline that tells the story of the other rings. Thorins farther is not in the theatrical release and gandalf was all alone in dol guldur 😊

So.. in the book it just quick says that gandalf took off to fight a necromancer.. and nothing more.. I love that the writers gathered much more info from Tolkien works in order for the film to make sense! And yes these movies can't be compared to LOTR but as you said.. Peter took over late in the production and it makes sense to make this homage to a children's book and make the movies more "family friendly" so a new generation gets excited about middle earth. I appreciate and enjoy the ties they connect to LOTR and overall it's beautiful filmmaking! But smaug is definitely the greatest dragon ever! 🥰

Family Friendly^^ While god knows how many Orcs Heads get sliced off, in one Sequence they let a Orc Head Fly into the Camera, in another one you see how a Elf got his Head Smashed in from Bolgs Mace and other such things.
