Light brought the girl to make it believable that he was just a normal high school student but also to show that he was getting on the bus for non-suspicious reasons. I think he also dropped the paper to confirm he was going on a date for the FBI agent to hear and at the same time to trigger the event of the hijacker to see Ryuk. Which is genius.
