Yeah, not gonna lie, most of the hate directed at the Fantastic Beasts series is for movie 2, rather than this one. While a lot of people felt like this movie didn't have a lot of plot, it was generally accepted as fun and feel good. The second movie made some MAJOR mistakes, such as several instances of directly conflicting with canon presented in the Harry Potter book series. A lot of fans were up in arms about that. Btw, fun fact that you almost definitely didn't pick up on because you haven't read the books yet, but the series is called "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" for a very specific reason. Newt Scamander actually canonically goes on to write a book by the same name and by the time Harry is at Hogwarts, it has become the Care of Magical Creatures textbook :)

I agree with the first half, I would rather wait for another book to be written and a movie based of the books. But this is what happens when cooperate America takes over a beloved series. I just ignore the movie as not being cannon to the franchise

There's a thing called retcon, it's done all the time and is nothing new. When JK Rowling created the original plot she didn't 100% fully flesh out every detail that ever happened in the history of the world she created. As you go back and work on defining things in the past you often run into things that simply don't work or mistakes you made in the original vision of the world. To call it bad writing is not really helpful. JK Rowling wrote the scripts, she knows her own world and knows what must be addressed to allow the story she wants to tell to be possible. There are still 3 movies in this series left, without knowing where the story is going it's premature to jump to judging these decisions. Just like many fans weren't happy with them, there were plenty of hardcore fans that also loved the changes or were interested to see where they lead, or who don't think they actually conflict as much as people are making them out to.
