It's funny cause after I made this part there was a picture running on twitter of the official donghua art of WWX's private library in his room in the Lotus Pier, with so many books, showing that he really did some reading about the cultivation world, as he did show in the Cloud Recess classroom. So it's really interesting how the information about the Lan ribbon wasn't there.
I didn't want to go with the donghua version where WWX copied the meaning of the ribbon wrong. Because in the novel, he really didn't know the meaning of it. Even if WWX had copied something wrong, he would've remembered it, just as he remembered what he read in the Wen doctrines Wen Chao gave them, and just like later in Guangyin temple he told Jin Ling that he copied the Lan texts so many times, he remembered. I believe Wei Wuxian really didn't know the meaning of the ribbon, so instead of LWJ assuming that he didn't know cause he copied it wrong (the donghua version I don't think could happen), he wonders how did such a studious and smart man such as WWX miss it with all the books he read and knowledge he pursues.
