I've been considering adding certain stats to the game; like strength, knowledge, and spirituality. These stats would let players pass certain dialogue checks.

Here are some pros I've thought of:

  • Another player resource to manage, allowing more path branching.
  • Different playthroughs of the game will give different opportunities, and secrets can be much harder to get.
  • Tasks can be written specifically with the purpose of raising stats.

Here are some cons:

  • Some paths will not be available in any given playthrough.
  • It's difficult to foreshadow how much of any stat someone may need.
  • Gaining those stats may be boring, or too mundane.
  • It needs extensive work to be balanced.

I'm very mixed on this topic. Money, Health, and Relationship points are already things the player will have to manage so this all may be too much. It could also be a great complement to the system that gives it more depth; or it could help someone retain those more essential resources by giving them options to get out of bad situations.

Core stats like money, relationship etc are good and clear but adding a lot of other stats will likely bog the overall quality of the game down because the story and core gameplay mechanics take a backseat to a more mundane, grindy, almost RPG like system. Works in a lot of games, but this isn’t a pureblood RPG game. :3 All of the pros can be gained by simply writing and implementing more branches based on player decisions, not stats. But you could implement certain side quests or activities that reward certain items or unlock certain buffers against “bad scenarios”.
