It took me quite some time to figure that out. When I write these stories, I don't really think too hard about it. Regardless of the scenario, I always keep in mind how each character would react to it. Think of an object, set it in front of them, and think about how each character would interact with that object. Giving your characters their own preferences might help make those interactions more interesting.
