From Chris: Imaginative anime movie from director Masaaki Yuasa, whose work  I've reviewed before. He has more arthouse tendencies than commercial  power. Not my favorite or anything but clearly a unique voice in the  field. This is a soaring rock musical...set 600 years ago in Japan  mingled with history, folklore and myth. The animation beautifully  exploits the medium, taking advantage of its flexibility. Based on a  novel.

This is a film designed for critical  acclaim but it's going to be a tough sell to Western audiences. You  have to be familiar with the traditional Japanese period instrument  called a biwa and how blind monks would tell stories while playing...  for the movie to make a real impact.

Brought over by GKIDS.
