From Chris: More or less the true story of beloved author C.S. Lewis' latter  years, a life-long bachelor who began a correspondence with an American  woman in his 50s through letters and eventually married her as she was  dying of cancer. This was a prestige pic made by Universal in the early  90s for Academy recognition, starring Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger.

Quiet,  absorbing drama of a cautious man falling in love quite by accident. As  a huge fan of The Chronicles of Narnia as a young boy, this is one  movie I had been wanting to catch for years. A small nod to the Lion,  The Witch and the Wardrobe plays into the movie. I was disappointed when  they stopped the Narnia movies.

Winger  actually got a Best Actress nomination for this role, her third  nomination. No idea why the Academy loved her so much, she got early  noms for An Officer and a Gentleman and Terms of Endearment as a young  actress in consecutive years and then did nothing particularly special.  She's serviceable in Shadowlands but her performance isn't especially  Oscar-worthy. Anthony Hopkins is magnificent as he was inclined to do in  this period and perfectly fits the role. He had an incredible stretch  in the 90s when he was the best actor in the world, remarkable  considering his age at the time.

Mill  Creek licenses a respectable, if older transfer from Universal with  excellent color reproduction and detail - the huge exception here is an  immense amount of EE. Major halos in several scenes, probably mastered  from the negative in the 2000s when that practice was common at  Universal.
