From Chris: Best Picture winner which also netted Redford Best Director.  Introspective, adult cinema which is well-acted but of limited appeal,  frankly. A well-off family falls apart when their teen son attempts  suicide after surviving a boating accident which killed his popular  older brother. The surviving son has a fractured relationship with his  mother.

Fine movie but this isn't even  Redford's best filmmaking. Paramount had a lot of clout back in this  era. This movie took home a lot of awards I think because of the people  involved, beloved figures inside Hollywood like Redford, Mary Tyler  Moore, Judd Hirsch. Mary Tyler Moore got a Best Actress nomination but  it's not a particularly special performance. She was just so popular  after almost two decades of television success that a nom was probably  inevitable. Heavyweight performances from Donald Sutherland and Judd  Hirsch, though.
