From Chris: Winner of six Academy Awards and one of the most prestigious Hollywood films from the golden age - heartthrob Montgomery Clift's searing performance is considered one of the most important early method acting roles in film history. It's a         quantum leap for a male lead over the stiffer acting style which characterized most of the 1940s.

Already a huge star in family films for MGM, 17-year-old Elizabeth Taylor transitions to an adult role here for Paramount which more or less cements her status as a film icon for the next two decades.

An interesting side story is that Hollywood sold Clift and Taylor as a real couple off screen for publicity and marketing, which was major news in the early 1950s.  Of course Clift was a closeted homosexual like Rock Hudson and he was only good friends with Taylor. Taylor would end up making three films with Clift.

Decent transfer but not spectacular. The movie's peculiar cinematography plays in heavy darkness often by choice.
