There was no easy way out of the situation without upsetting Jeane. She was convinced that she could handle herself, and you had to contend with the possibility that she could. She was a talented mage and her haughtiness was not without some backing. You noticed the way the orc had been acting around her the whole time. He was 'encouraging.' The orc was undoubtedly manipulating her by using her confidence. He said things to get under your skin while endearing himself to her and it was working, frustratingly enough. Knowing all that, the only way forward from this position while still maintaining good rapport with Jeane was trust.
“Alright. I trust you, Jeane.” She smiled and seemed relieved.

“Well look at that. She does have a brain. Orcs aren't dangerous to smart girls. We're actually pretty harmless.” The male blustered.

“What!?” Luire exclaimed. You pull him back further and cover his mouth. Unlike with Heilan, his small frame was something you could comfortably control. At least, when all he was was a ball of rage. You whispered something in his ear that at least got the elf to stop for a moment.

It was not blind trust and it certainly did not mean you had to trust the orc. No, all Jeane wanted was for you to trust her. In a way it was somewhat ideal, since now Jeane would be closer to you while being closer to the orc. If you pushed her away she would be off somewhere doing who knows what. To you, the most important things were keeping an eye on the orc while he was allowed to be close, keeping an eye on Jeane, and giving her more reason to be with you rather than him. Then after all that, keeping everyone else in your party happy and out of trouble for the week. It was infinitely more difficult than it would have been if you simply reasoned with her from the start, but it would have to be done.

You released Luire. “We should head back for now, Jeane, Luire.” You looked to the orc, not wanting to suggest that he come back. He was free to, if he wanted.

“Well hold on. It's orc education time. Jeanie mentioned she never likes to leave a lesson unfinished.” He offered while casually shooting you a knowing wink. It was quite possible that the orc knew that you knew yet still carried on, as though it did not matter in the least.

“You did catch us in the middle of something. If it's all the same, I'm going to stay here for a while longer if you two want to leave.” Jeane stated calmly.

Surprisingly it was Luire who spoke first, whispering into your ear. “This dumb woman is going to get herself orked. Do you really need to keep an eye on her and watch it happen?”

You return in a quiet tone. “The idea is, if I'm around I might be able to stop her from getting orked.”

“Optimistic, but I understand. Is it truly 'trusting' her if you are needing to keep watch?”

You shook your head. “No, it isn't.” Luire was satisfied with that and stood firm beside you.

“We can join, can't we?”

He opened his arms in a welcoming gesture and pointed out nearby seats that had you and Luire gathering around him rather closely. Jeane's seat was of course right beside him, as you saw. “Of course!”

You and Luire both sat down with Jeane retaining her seat next to the large male. “Please continue.” She requested.

“As I was saying, unlike your kind we don't slaughter captives. We barely even do war, really, unless we're attacked.” Luire rolled his eyes and exhaled in response to that. You could tell that it was probably complete bullshit. Jeane was not exactly 'eating it up' either, but she was taking it in rather academically.

“Got something to comment on?” He pressed Luire to speak up.

“You still go to war, you just do it differently and the result is just as bad for those you war with.” Luire spoke mostly to Jeane in an attempt to counter the propaganda.

“You're talking like you aren't an orc already.” He taunted.
“You know I'm right about all this stuff, the damn elves just got to you and did weird things to your brain to make you think differently. It's a real shame. You should've stayed with us. You'd be on my side right now if you had any sense.” The man explained convincingly. It actually seemed to have some effect on Luire.

“W-what?” Luire was definitely getting worked up, you could tell. He was uncomfortable and thrown off by the comments.

The orc turned to Jeane once the elf was dealt with. She looked at him intently as he spoke. “See, what you girls don't get is that you've all been brainwashed from the moment you were born.”

“Brainwashed?” Your face twists up in disbelief at the bold claim. You leaned forward to argue.
“I-”

“Honey, when a male is talking you listen.” He waited for you to give a noticeable pause before nodding and continuing. You were too stunned to really respond.

“Alright.” He said that, then looked over to see that Jeane was raising her hand.
“Yeah?”

“I just wanted to say...” She looked to you evenly. It was not a scolding tone, just an informative one.
“I have learned that he does not like being interrupted and will interrupt whenever he feels like it. He has instructed me to raise my hand if I would like to speak while he is speaking so that he knows. Usually he just keeps talking, but eventually he will address it.”

“Very good.” He nodded approvingly at her.

Your jaw dropped. You wondered if the reason Jeane was taking to this so easily was because of how much like a school setting he was presenting his 'lessons' with. How much of the orcs actions were intentional versus coincidental, you wondered.
“I still had a question.” Jeane added.

“Go ahead.”

“You refer to all of us as females, even him?” She pointed to you.

“You should refer to her as such.” The orc clarified.

Jeane lifted a brow. “I do not think I will do that unless he asks. Not yet, anyway.” The orc was a little surprised by the resistance but was ultimately unabated. You were relieved and a little touched that she was at least approaching some of what he was saying critically.

He shook his head and continued. “To my people, we are the world's males. In legend, in the beginning we teach that my people were the first upright creations that guarded paradise. Our garden. We were immortals that lived to look after the physical plane and everything that lived there. Our powerful essence was enough to grow trees and populate rivers with fish. To populate vast plains and forests. The gods became jealous of this essence and saw fit to bring us many partners shaped after our own bodies, only slightly different in order to entice us and lure us into giving them our essence, instead. They claimed that there would be more of us if we listened and that we would cover the planet instead of just one small plot of vibrant land. Our ambition was piqued. The humans, the goblins, the beastfolk. Your wombs were created to hold orc essence.” You raised your hand.
“Go ahead.” After he stopped to allow you to speak he cautiously stretched his arm up, over and around Jeane's shoulders. She noticed it, but said very little in response. His arm was only over the top of the seat and not truly draping over her shoulder. Still you would have expected some pushback that never came. Pushing that to the back of your mind you tried to remember what you were going to ask, but ultimately forgot. You cheeks became a bit hot.

“N-never mind. Continue.”

He eyed you for a moment, then continued. “What we didn't realize was that the lesser gods tricked us. They were jealous of our essence and their lust for our bodies was just that, lust. They could never accept the idea of being ruled by us in exchange for our power, as was the deal. So, while they raised several partners to match us in bed, the gods always had a different plan. The moment they had our seed in great enough quantity they warped our unborn children using what mild, warped powers these lesser gods had. They did not have the power of creation like our patron, but they could corrupt creation.” You raised your hand again. He nodded.

“You said they couldn't create, so how did they create partners for you?” When he again paused, his hand came down and started actively touching Jeane. He rubbed the other side of her shoulder and pulled her small body into him subtly. She was about to react, but then she noticed your reaction first. Disdain and worry. Her expression became calculating and she decided to ignore the gesture while she observed you carefully. You held back your reaction, causing her to nod approvingly and shift away from the man just as faintly as she was pulled. He obliged. All of that subtle movement took place over just a few seconds and ended before he had even begun speaking.

“Good question. Left that part out.” He looked up to collect his thoughts before continuing.
“That's right... My people were the original Men created to rule and take care of this world, but the world was populated with other things by our creator that were below us. Fish, Apes, lizards... The many lesser gods created the beastfolk by warping many animals into a weak perversion of our shape. The same was done for humans and elves from different apes. In the garden, with our essence, our presence was enough to sustain all this life and allow it to flourish.” He waited to see if there were any more interruptions, then cleared his throat before going on. Most of you were quite rapt. He was a surprisingly good story teller. His voice was calm and authoritative, despite the occasional snort that reminded you the man was basically a pig.

“Anyway, once they had stolen our essence, they had their own creations absorb it. Our strength was distributed among the various Beastfolk, our immortality was perverted to the extent that it was made short by the elves who could not even live a few thousand years at best. Finally, the humans were the worst for stealing our comprehension of divinity. Lizards wanted too much. They took everything they could and were therefore punished. Dragons were created, but both they and their god were cast down, away from the rest to join their creation and their entire kind has been cursed with greed to this day.” He stared down, saddened.
“As we lost our full strength, our immortality and even the full understanding of our god, that god struck the world in anger just once. It was enough to tear the known world apart and rend the gods and their 'people' to different corners of the continent. The lesser gods then crafted in their people's wombs 'men' by your definition. Their bodies were small and weak and not at all like ours. These things were able to do what the lesser gods promised us. Your peoples spread out to populate and take over the planet while we were left in our barren garden at the center of the world.” You were all leaned in except Luire who was slumped down with his arms crossed. It was like he had heard it all before.

The orc clapped his hands, snapping you all back. “So! That is why I rightfully call you all girls, and orcs. Despite how warped you are, you're all still children of the original orcs in some way, just like me. All we want is to take back what was stolen from us for good.”

“Do you believe that myth, Jeane?” You asked as you walked her back to your area. To your surprise, the man just let you all go after he finished his sermon. He stated that he had to prepare some things and may be by later.

The elf woman tilted her head to one side. “Why would I believe a myth fully? I assume it is informed somewhat by some truth, but ultimately there are a lot of holes and a lot of things that seem like it was just a tale thought up by some old orc shaman to let his people feel better about living in mud huts while civilization developed around them.” She smirked and added derisively.
“It must feel nice to have a convenient, divine reason for being the worst peoples on the planet.”

You laughed, both at the statement and at the realization in that moment that she was not really gone, or taken in. At the end of the day Jaene had purely academic and personal reasons for wanting to engage the orc in discussion and perhaps with the right move, that is all it could be.
“I agree completely.” As you said that she turned and kissed you.

“Thank you for trusting me, Hero. I appreciate the vote of confidence, truly.” She smiled widely after she broke the kiss and stared deeply into your eyes.
“Perhaps we may make this work.”

You smirk. “You don't mind doing it with a 'girl?'” You said jokingly.

“Honestly the biggest problem is the risk of spreading 'false progeny' any further.” She added playfully, playing off of the sermon you both heard. As funny as it was, it did strike you just how much it stuck with you and Jeane.

“Did he say anything else to you?”

She nodded. “He said now was my chance to dress more 'interestingly'. Nobody will remember it so there should be less embarrassment in trying it.”

“I'm sure he meant orclike.”

“Sounds slutty, regardless.” She clarified.

You shrugged lightly. “Might be fun for us, unintentionally.” You felt more comfortable as soon as you knew that she was not actually being brainwashed.

“Might be.” She offered coyly.

“Wait, where's Luire?” You let Jeane continue on and hang back to wait. Luire eventually appeared.
“What's up?” You asked. The elf looked a bit downtrodden.

“I see you think that you are fine but orc brainwashing is really, really strong.” He warned.

“What do you mean? Everything seems fine.”

“Does it?” He began calmly following Jeane from further back with you. You both saw her divert towards a market area. With a few coins that you did not recognize she paid off a vendor and disappeared into a tent.

“Do we go in?” You asked cluelessly.
“To follow her, I mean.”

“That is up to you.” Luire shifted uncomfortably for a few moments.
“It's an orc beauty salon...”

“But the people running it look like beastfolk.” You took a closer look. The two girls at the front of the tent were two beastfolk women of indeterminate type. They each wore what could be described as trashy attire. The clothing was similar to what Kara first wore when she met you. Small, tight shorts, only the girls in front were worse. They were faintly tanned and had thong straps peaking up from their low-cut shorts. Their chests covered by a thin, tight fabric that allowed their nipples to easily peak through as thought they were wearing nothing at all. It looked as though their nipples were pierced. Their bodies in general were covered in tattoos and piercings that marked who they belonged to, according to Luire's gaze.

“The people running it are 'orcs.'” Luire clarified.

I know there are bad ends but are there good ends? And if we get one does it end the story?

Tanya Wormald

There is one end that the story is moving towards and ultimately, the choices are going to affect what that looks like. My philosophy for in between is that any situation that causes the cahracter to permanently lose agency, or lose control of their own 'fate' is an end point. Some people have commented that some of those that I've written are 'good ends' So in a way.
