Rickart

Also, also, it's really sweet to see how concerned Kara is for Lad. She's finally trying to do what she should have done before as a mentor to Fin and Yeong, protecting and guiding her charge without throwing them to the wolves.

Roland Taranis

Yup. And it compounds with the uneasiness of the situation to make her freak out the way she does 😉

Analysis time ! ^_^ I'll explore the two main points of view that are linked to our choice, Kara's & Fin's. Kara's PoV taints the perspective of the chapter through & through, but I think it offer a very deep insight of her character that allows us to measure her recent changes. Her reaction can be explained with 3 points that resonate with each other into an infinite feedback loop. 1) Her care for Lad As highlighted by Rickart just above, her attachment to Lad cannot be denied. Under his impulse she did get closure and perspective for the purpose of personal growth, and she reciprocate in acting the part. I could go as far as saying she is "infatuated" with him, but this hasn't crossed into romantic territory (yet). Since she is the older and overall more capable one, she does get a visceral response in trying to protect him from a danger he doesn't seem to react to, even if it goes against his usual "modus operandi". 2) She knows and respect the capabilities of Fin's party It would be foolish to ignore the fact she is facing many a face she has known in the past and assessed firsthand the twisted abilities. Djir, Ashur and hell she made Fin to be the way he is right now. His pained disinterest sure isn't helping... And even those she does not know from before, she quickly assessed the carnivorous, sharp mindset. Fiona & Marienn first in line. As such, one of her old defense mechanism, the (infuriating) blind bravado she showed time & again in the Bad Ends is utterly absent. Personally, I think it is extremely positive for her not to rely on such a shaky tool anymore. I think she would have wished for nothing more that for the "reunion" to go exactly the way it did with Dark Fin's Raithe. An heartfelt apology to clear the air once and for all, but it wasn't to be so... 3) An example of the exact situation she tried to avoid all this time This part feels like a gut feeling, but I think this kind of situation might be the very reason why her own mindset was that twisted from the very beginning. She is outmanned and most likely outclassed. A fish swimming right in the middle of a shark gang, wondering when she's going to be gobbled up. I think that her unorthodox power plays, domineering but not really, aloofly caring for no one but herself, was initially designed for her to be able to "dance" around such a situation. Isolating members of such a group, she would have have wormed her way into their separate mindset, getting herself into the safe "eye of the storm", using her body as a commodity. And doing so while keeping a charge safe is borderline impossible. So she cut off any meaningful relationship. Even Cao did not need her to be involved to be able to keep himself safe, and that may be a reason why they truly were so disinterested in each other despite their surface level accord. But Lad does deserve for her to go so out of her own comfort zone... These 3 points together are making her freak her shit out like no other time ever. But since this terror attack is motivated by very good intentions, to reinforce her positive growth over her "redemption arc", Lad shouldn't dismiss her input under no circumstance. Fin's side. Fin does act very suspiciously across the whole chapter. From his borderline disrespect towards Lad (Maybe I wouldn't mind you groping me, but you could ask first, dickhead !), his deliberate ignoring of Kara, down to him taking the both of them right down what feels like the dragon's gullet without an explanation. This sure doesn't help Kara feeling better... I won't spoil the latest Odyssey chapter for those who can't access it yet, but I'll say that Fin has to make a decision of his own that could impact his intentions towards Lad. Thankfully, as of the time I write these lines, the vote seems to be going towards the more "reasonable" choice he can make. I think that there is a possible unparalleled synergy between Lad & Fin. And it seems like it is still a very "alive" possibility in accomplishing everyone's goals. As such, as I already advocated, I'd go for a tie. Showing both Kara that despite the strength of her reaction she is behaving in a positive way, and still opening a helping hand towards Fin.
