Every year thousands of young women around South Africa are tested to find out if they are a v**g*n – someone who has not had s*x. Some respect this as a cultural practice, others find it degrading.

Mam’ Dladla, who coordinates a v**g*n*ty testing programme in KZN, is proud of the practice. “It is an amazing tradition which encourages young women to be proud of their bodies while they are still v**g**s,” she says.

In South Africa, the concept of v**g*n*ty testing has been under the spotlight because

of the Children’s Act 38 of 2005 partially legalising it. Section 12 thereof, provides for

the testing to be performed on both male and female children over the age of sixteen

with their informed consent. It has also been revived as a Zulu custom which gained

momentum in response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
