Figured this was coming.
The imagery of the city was powerful.    The OST in this ep was stellar

The music in the beginning is "Rei" by Sawano. There is another one with a very similar vibe named "Shift One to Zero"

Not sure if you caught it but their new operation group is called the same thing as when they were the 86 "retirement" group - Spearhead. Did all of these to go to a different country and still ended up exactly where they started: 86, frontline, Spearhead, suicide mission.

As mentioned below, song is called “Rei” or “Zerox5” which is how I know it. Great piece! Depression Mondays indeed! I always look forward to your Monday reactions.

So I had been waiting for the last episode and this one. The first four episodes to cour 2 was really just the calm before the storm (weird to say that about an era where Eugene dies horrifically, but that's the stepping stone). These two episodes are where things start to get dicey once again. This arc really ramps up. I am thrilled to see how you react to the rest. Also this episode has never failed to make me cry when the Juggernaut pieces fall. Fun (really not fun, very sad) fact, the animators made 575 pieces fall behind Shin. One for each of his comrades he had carried.

A couple of things to note: the show uses two different color to signify life and death, those being respectively red and blue. If you noticed the Legion’s “eye” are all blue while the Juggernaut’s are red. During the ED we see the tags of the dead members of Spearhead being blue while shin is in red. Same thing happens with Lena because Shin saw the legion in Republic capital and thinks she’s dead. You probably caught this but the “goodbye speech” she gives to Lena in his mind is so full of sorrow because he always thought that he finally found someone that could carry on his name when he’ll eventually die on the battlefield in Lena, but realizing that she’s is probably dead shattered every little bit of hope that remained in him

The first scene of this episode is one of my favorite moments, in a show with such amazing sound design, there's something really powerful in keeping in silent behind the soundtrack. Shows a lot of trust in what they can make us feel while abandoning a core component of the show up to now. I love Lena's "I won't forget" cutting through the chorus of voices and chaos going on in Shin's head after reading that letter. It's one of my favorite themes/sentiments from this show. Right now Shin can't forget the dead in a way that's really just harming him. That scene with all the deceased 86 is so good. That sudden crashing sound of all their name tags, the shot of the rain drops on the window being Shin's "tears". I've noticed over the course of this rewatch that they like to do that a lot. There's a lot of moments where the characters can't seem to cry for themselves, and the environment will be the one to represent the sadness that they can't seem to let out. Outstanding directing choices there.

The song in the beginning is by Sawano Hiroyuki and is called "Rei".

Idk how you're able to wait a week between these, I remember I had to binge the last like 6 episodes of this

Man I remember the extra stab of pain watching this episode when I found out what was in the letters being stacked on top of everything going on.

I can't believe it took me rewatching to realize that Shin has been very acutely aware of the legions locations as far back as st magnolia... He was 100% ready to paint the whole nation as overrun. Can't imagine how much he was dealing with, with that on his mind too ontop of everything else going on.
