Well that was one of the best pieces of media that I have seen.
Telling that story could be done in SO many different ways but I was very glad it was the Sound Euphonium universe that was used.

You should have seen "A silent Voice [Koe no Katachi"] it's literally the same staff, personally I like it much more. It's highly acclaimed by the way.

Gran_Air

My favorite anime movie for a reason, it doesn’t need some world ending stakes or some deep philosophical message, just a really nice high school story presented in such a beautiful way

I could write a whole book with what I would like to say about this studio and its projects, but I'll summarize it haha. Kyoto Animation in a personal appreciation, is my favorite animation studio, it may not be very popular like others (example Mappa, Madhouse or Toei Animation) but all their projects are made with love and dedication, and it shows in their product, in this case is a feature film, the characters transmit what they feel to the viewer, and I think they do it in a unique way. I hope you get to see more series from this studio soon, most of them may not necessarily be about music, but that doesn't make them disappoint, all their projects have something that makes them unique, and especially those OSTs, like Violet Evergarden's, which are a wonderful way to narrate such a story.

Probably my favorite part of the Eupho experience thus far. Maybe because it's easier for me to relate as a non-musician to a character like Nozomi, but the directing and OST just felt super on point the entire time.

Damn now I gotta wait for the next movie to see your reaction to the performance. Bombastic side eye to Reina, like gurl mind your biz. Reina is to me what Yuuko is to Tony.

I really recommend checking out more stuff by Kyoto Animation (the studio that did this and Euphonium). "A silent voice" has some of the most unbelievably unique and fitting sound design I've ever seen. It's not necessarily about music, but sound does play a large part in the plot. It's of their best movies, and was actually nominated for the oscars, which is extremely rare for an anime. I would love to see what you think of it!

Kegs

Been looking forward to this, thanks alot! love the insight into things i didnt notice

Saw the notification at 1:30am, it's now 3am, I had to do it lol. I was waiting for this reaction, ost wise it's my all time favorite from Kensuke Ushio (also worked on Chainsaw man and A Silent Voice). Directing wise Naoko Yamada produced yet another masterpiece. Regarding your question about the first ost at the beginning (when they're walking to the band room), it's called "wind, glass, bluebird". You can find it on spotify as well as the whole album called "girl, dance, staircase" (I'll link it here) : https://open.spotify.com/intl-ja/album/5R1zRpVKFErbA55vyRRRPE?si=DCUzu19uTqeoBXR7BaqeoA I highly recommend you check out the full version of Liz and the Blue Bird (the piece) after the next movie (Chikai no Finale). You can find a full recording on youtube as well as the four separate movements on spotify in that same album I linked above. I'll put the youtube link here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTUqwBKbZ0o And also a live recording from the Akiba Wind Project of the peice here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MQIkEHNmeE it's a very nice performance considering the piece. Regarding the movie, I could write so much about all the subtleties there are in it, honestly even after smth like 12 times I still discover new stuff. I'll just point out the beginning and end of the movie, more specifically the ost and the footsteps. At the beginning of the movie, Nozomi and Mizore aren't in sync while walking, and are creating two kinds of rythms different from each other (a video pointed out it was 3/8 against 6/4 but I might be misrembering, not entirely sure). At the end of the movie, they are in sync, and are in sync with the music. To go even further, they weren't in sync while being together but become synchronised when parting ways. Hence the "disjoint" at the beginning and "joint" at the end (but you probably got that one). This movie sits top 3 in animated movie for me, top5 in anime overall, a work of art

Tony's students (probably): "We appreciate your year of teaching. As thanks, we brought you this boiled egg."

umm… you might want to edit your comment a bit. While it is minor, this IS the 3rd movie in the series. Per your advice, listening to the full recording now would be a massive spoiler given that this anime is based in part on its musical performance. After the 4th movie is when you should listen to the full recording. Just thought you should know and as a side note, 12 times!? I'm curious if you own any of the blurays? If I recall you also said you've watched the series as a whole about that many times, no? Either way it's an impressive feat nonetheless!

古河渚

Baqua15 - I always referred to Liz as Liz and not a part of the three movies called Hibike! Euphonium that’s why, but granted, edited and made change to it, cause it can be confusing. Also no, sadly I don’t own any piece of merch related to Hibike, but yeah, 12 times lol. It’s mainly cause this anime is my safe place, whenever I don’t feel too good it appeases me

Jarod S

Yeah, still my favourite part of the whole sound euphonium series. They killed it with this one

Chris Hee

Wow, that was great. Actually my first time watching this one, the only film/show in the franchise I haven't watched before. Very, very beautiful I like how you can hope that Mizore and Nozomi will be able to lead healthy, happy lives in the future while still being friends. Mizore will probably be able to make more friends and treasure them Nozomi's been able to get over the person she introduced to a hobby outgrowing her. Not an easy transition. Nice seeing Kumiko and Reina and the other Eupho characters from a different perspective. Was great seeing and hearing the reactions and analysis of the music! lastly, yeah I did kinda find it funny that whoever was feeling down went to hang out with the fishes hahaha

Chris Hee

Silent Voice is definitely amazing, I second that! Maybe the most similar in style to this, that I've seen

Chris Hee

Reina is pretty crazy sometimes, but I think in her second year she's learnt to mind people's feelings a little bit more. She actually apologised to Mizore, which is a start hahaha

kinetic98

The ost for this movie kinda reminds me of zelda botw ost

kinetic98

The boiled egg bit got me

석화 김

There is one more euphonium movie ! Check Sound Euphonium Chikai no Finale please!

Puegoki

Something about the score, and specially present in that first scene, is that the music director use a lot of things that you can found in a classroom or school in general like the beakers in the science room.

LewdProxy

Gorgeous. Just checked out the 3rd movie (First 2 are recaps) and saw the full performance of this song. The piece is crazy

Red Menace

good god, the necks.

Red Menace

i don't know if its just because I've been binging the show through these re-actions, genuinely learning from them, but i felt like i appreciated the third movement at 1:13:00 much more than i could have before, like i could hear the tumultuousness, perhaps I'm reading too much into it lol

Red Menace

like i can just FEEL the emotion in the music, the tumult of having to let a friend go, the joy, sorrow, and anger at it, ngl, i actually shed a tear, music so rarely, at least for me, convoys emotions like that, its mostly just something that sounds good, damn

Red Menace

damn, i don't know what to say, that movie showed the power of animation and music...

RamsessZ

Damn…
