Sadly, I think it's the fact that the child demon looked like a girl crying out for her mother which pushed the needle a bit. Also because the village chief had a young daughter, too, and it seems like the chief's wife also had passed away. He probably heard his daughter crying out for her mother quite a bit. :( If that demon looked older, I doubt there would have been mercy. But I guess she might've said something else deceitful in that case Ah, and Flamme, the mage mentioned at the start, was Frieren's master. She planted that big tree and sent Frieren off on this quest!

As a refresher, one of the prior episodes showed that Frieren was Flamme's apprentice roughly a thousand years ago, which is why she can always tell the fakes grimoires from the real ones. It was Flamme's real book they found that has them going on this journey to the place where the dead can be found.
