I feel like the reason the jazz instructor didn't like the movie is because it really doesn't have a positive message. Take this scene for example; In the beginning it might seem like Andrew is giving it to the man and all but it all comes full circle when we remember that Andrew came back into the abusive situation on his own feet and the way Fletcher controls the drummer with the unrealistic gestures you mentioned symbolizes his hold over the guy. At the end, Fletcher mouthes "good job" and Andrew is over the moon for it. Which means despite all the abuse Fletcher gave, Andrew was still waiting for his approval. Fletcher really felt justified not defeated here. The titular question of the movie "Is this level of greatness really only achievable with a dangerous level of obsession and an abusive teacher?" is answered in the ending as a "yes" so its no wonder a proper instructor would find this movie not it.
