I found a good plot synopsis: The series focuses on Tsukasa, a player character in a virtual reality massively multiplayer online role-playing game called The World. He wakes up to find himself in a dungeon in The World, but he suffers from short-term memory loss as he wonders where he is and how he got there. The situation gets worse when he discovers he is trapped in the game and cannot log out. From then on, along with other players, Tsukasa embarks on a quest to find the truth behind his abnormal situation.

2023-08-07 01:01:21 I would say this anime is, imo, what a lot of the staples in anime today have to thank. Sword Art Online and Overlord come to mind. Both of which I don't think you've watched but you recently became infatuated with Overlord's synopsis iirc. You're totally right that the name ".hack" in itself is a real grabber. Actually watching it totally exceeds the mystery/wonder that the name suggests. It has a genuine -vibe- to it that I can only describe as a dream like MMO with guilds/questing/mystery/conspiracy/fighting/politics, and badass character designs. It's not technically a fantasy genre but the mmo game in the story is fantasy genre so it gives it that vibe too. Derek posted the synopsis above but, imo, compared to anime of that genre today, ".hack" is much more mature and has a darker tone. There's a couple of installments for it that are connected story wise. It's for sure an anime classic and I hope you watch it someday, even on your own time if it doesn't win the polls on here. Definitely was ahead of it's time imo.

.hack is actually one of my favorite franchises. It was designed from the start to be multimedia, with the core being the series of three games which are basically pseudo-MMOs about an in game MMO. When you start the game it literally takes you to your PC desktop, where you can start the game-in-the-game, or do stuff like check forums, news, email, chat with the other "players" outside the game, etc. The in-game MMO predictably has some abnormal stuff going on, and the lore surrounding it is really interesting. .hack//SIGN along with some other novel and manga entries basically tell their own stories while also expanding the lore and filling in gaps from the game's story. It was a super immersive experience and a really interesting concept for a multimedia project that I don't think has been properly attempted since.
