I actually cried my eyes out when I first read the manga. I was already really liking Himeno, and scene hit me hard. Hit me even harder when this aired, with the music and animation.

Yeah, this is the turning point of the series. The manga community was shocked too back then. Finally seeing it being animated definitely hyped a lot of people. This is where Chainsaw man ends and Painsaw man begins.

This definitely is a wild point in the show that was masterfully directed/animated, from the slow start with Himeno and Denji all the way to the finish with all the sudden deaths. To answer your question asking if this is what anime is: Simple answer, yes. This is one of the dozens of animes among the thousands that have been produced that receives the love and care in production and story writing. It's not the most profound story, but the way it's directed makes it so interesting, followed up by interesting character dynamics and amazing soundtracks. I know you've seen a lot of AoT so you've already been introduced to action and story heavy anime, but I'm glad this episode was able to affect you in some way. I'm waiting for the day you react to more good anime 😃😄

Fujimoto (The Manga Author) established that everyone can die every time. A Story with him is like driving with him and he is turning everytime in a direction you did not come seeing. And while he does that, he create interesting Charakters with interesting Charakter Arcs. I am so happy that CSM got a such beautyfull adaptation.

I dunno if I would say it isn't normal... certainly many animes have no issues with killing off characters, or even with crazy plot twists, in the case though it is has a certain style to it though that could be called new.

the lack of plot armor isn’t really normal tho… it’s like, even AoT main characters have plenty of that for long stretches of time. But CSM just seemingly killed off the majority of the cast that was introduced in the span of like 6 minutes 😂 the plot twists were definitely there, but it all happened so quickly that it was barely felt, unlike most shows where it’s typically dragged out over many episodes or even whole seasons
