Yeah the attention to detail in this anime is amazing, most other shows dont get this kind of treatment though,this show is just backed by a phenomal staff.

After his dad died, he was spending all of his time either killing devils to pay off debt, chopping trees to pay off debt, selling his body parts to pay off debt or some other thing that could pay off his debt. I think considering this, the way his character is written really makes sense.

Suggestion for a video maybe: The opening has a bunch of movie references you should look up a YouTube video looking at them at side by side comparison, it'll make you love the opening even more!
