I think you misread what was happening with the competition roster announcement. There were definitely more than just the one trombone or the two trumpets that were selected. The ones we did see were only shown because they're characters we know. And then we obviously saw the full announcement for the tuba and euphoniums because those are all characters we know. I guess it was a bit confusing because they didn't insert obvious cuts between the different sections.

There are actually some hardcore Hibike Euphonium fans who know all the background characters and what they play and they've managed to sus out what the exact competition roster is from little snippets here and there and rest assured there's definitely more than one trombone and two trumpets.

At the 36:35 minute of the reaction, the group is standing, ready to play at the competition, and you can see three people holding trombones, neither of which is Shuuichi. I believe it’s a time saving thing. The assistant teacher said at the end of calling the tubas and the euphoniums something like “that’s all of the section”. After saying two trumpets, we instead get a cut to another section, rather than her finishing. Similar with Shuuichi for trombone.
