Wait till you see the finale 😏

Meru Tenchin

Askeladd is by far one of my favourite anime characters in general (you can call him villain as well but for me he’s not the one lol). The author nailed him.

Highside

I love how natural all of these characters are, you could probably make a live-action series of this anime and it wouldn't seem out of place.

Y0m0three

I'm sure you probably got this but Askeladd killed Bjorn at his own request. he's a viking and so wanted to die in battle rather than in bed so that he could go to valhalla. Also the nickname Karlsefni that they gave thorfinn translates to "the makings of a man" and is a name he shares with his real life historical counterpart.

SKAOG

22:12 I love this OST as well (approx. second half of "Somewhere Else"), paired with the still image of 22:43, I saw it out of context while playing a random OST mix on YT, and it played a part in convincing me to watch this anime solely based on how powerful the moment it was trying to convey felt, and the moment did not disappoint when i finally saw it.

Bjorn was severely wounded when they betrayed Askeladd and was confirm to not make it. Alti is the person that wounded him. He was the person that was given a piece of gold and was told to never pick up a sword by Askeladd

FullHeart

RIP Bjorn. I know you were dying anyways but it still sucks to see you go. The duel was so Bjorn could die in battle with a sword in his hand and go to Valhalla, instead of dying from his infections. But if you watch it again he didnt die with his sword in his hand - he dropped it to hold his only friend.

Do people think Askeladd was speaking the truth when he told Björn they were friends? Since he hated all Danes. I'm still not sure whether or not he was for real or if he simply didn't want to be completely heartless as a man was drifting away.

Lixien

I guess is up to interpretation but I want to think he did. At minimum, he cared for him. He was his right hand man, went out of his way to do all of this, he threw a look of shock and concern when he missed his vitals and his last words were him saying that, indeed, he was his only friend. It's just hard to think he did all of that just to "not be hearthless as a man". This is not me just being "positive" it just makes more sense. Like... think about it, we're talking about Askeladd, this man is not exactly a good guy, he wouldn't care about doing "good things" without a reason.

Next episode is a big one

Lixien

Btw, before you get confused in the future. Karlsefni is not Thorfinn's real surname. It's a nickname that people gave him after hearing about him. It means "real man" or something like that. It's basically their own version of calling someone a GigaChad lol.

Mirrorline

probably does because if not, he wouldn't be in a bad mood after killing him.

cue

and the one after that and the one after that

I’m so glad you’re enjoying Vinland. It’s definitely a show that I wish I had watched sooner in my anime journey. I just hope you’ll love season 2 as well because a lot of people hated on it. In my opinion it’s better than season 1 though.

Ethan Hines

Well, if he really hated Björn, I’d assume he wouldn’t give a shit about being heartless to just another worthless Dane in his dying moments. But also, I feel like Askeladd isn’t 100% truthful in his hatred towards Danes as well. Maybe he’s just in denial. I say that because of the thing he does for Atli and Torgrim. So yeah, long story short, I think Askeladd really thought of Björn as a friend. You could just see it in his face after he killed the guy. He looked sad as hell. He had the blacked out anime eyes and everything. Björn was his guy.

Ethan Hines

He’s a villain and a deuteragonist at the same time, that’s the crazy part.

Meru Tenchin

“A lot of people” are shonen nerds. Tony enjoyed frieren so he’s probably gonna love s2 even more.

Yuyu

its a real shame honestly, season 2 is where you really see the point of the entire story and the message the author is actually trying to convey- a very powerful one too.

Meru Tenchin

Yep. It made me start collecting vinland saga manga and now it’s in my top 3.

Yuyu

oh absolutely! Askeladd is a complex character but you can see how his bias against the danes comes from his earliest childhood memories of being treated like shit+how his mother was treated. Now those biases dont just go away but he spent so long among danes he probably reinforced his bias of hatred but at the same time? If hes only ever around Danes eventually he'll find Danes who arent necessarily hateable... maybe even likeable. He still hates Danes. But Danes are people, and Askeladd is human. He was alone in a sense for so long. I imagine Bjorn really was the closest thing he had to a friend.

Lulu

Idk who a lot of people are? Maybe a vocal minority. It has a higher rating on MAL than S1 and all I saw was praise for it in the weekly discussions. Maybe tik tok brain new-age shounen enjoyers disliked it because it actually has a story lol
