I think weak or not perfected is the better word for that philosopher stone. It can still do stuff, it just has a limit unlike the real one.

So the truth about the stone will be revealed with time, Ed didn’t understand it either this ep hence his confusion when it shattered so as the viewer we are on the same page as them right now

Yeah, the short jokes do get replayed way too much in this series, at least in the beginning. But that honestly might be my biggest criticism for the show. I've said it before, but this show shines the brightest in the moments where it takes itself seriously.

The comedy is alright, but sometimes it gets in the way in some moments that are supposed to be serious. It gets better as the show progress from what I remember.

My biggest gripe with the earlier episodes is how repetitive the jokes are and also the bit about human transmutation being repeated practically every episode. It's like every one-off character needs to learn about what the Elric brothers did and has to portray them as tragic heroes. Once we're past that it gets pretty insane

It might be an apologist's take, but the "short Ed" jokes are played to hammer down a matter of perspective and "immaturity". It truly tries to make one be like, "alright, I get it, he's tiny and short-tempered", and while I believe it goes a bridge too far at times, I "trust the process", hahah. Also, in the series Ed calls this a "fake" philosopher's stone, but implying that the real one would not break, so this one was basically like a "knockoff", a stone with the same properties but extremely weak.

They said "fake " because the real one won't be destroyed that easily and I think the word they used was confusing and it wasn't meant to be.

The artist for the opening, Yui, has uploads of their content pretty strictly enforced, probably due to Sony so I'd be surprised if you managed to get an opening reaction to exist on youtube. It may have to just be Patreon only.

Line

The short jokes are only really a thing in the beginning of the show. It's more to have it all start light hearted and give some personality to the characters. This is a show that starts out laughing at itself a lot, and then becomes more and more serious as the show goes on. You'll see, but the jokes are very much needed distractions for what is to come
