Also note that the artist's style doesn't have to be the same as the final style for the game, in fact I would argue that having a style very different to the final art for the game helped because it meant I was able to focus on the concepts rather than the style, if that makes sense.
You have to be prepared for concept art to take longer than you expect, and for it to be more expensive than a normal reference. You want to explore multiple options rather than come up with something crisp.
Personally, I love how the boy has turned out, he's one of my favourite characters, if not my favourite completely.
