Firstly, I had Wagner Mutt create these nice little undies for him from two dimensions: top and side.
That's all very well, but since his balls are now contained within the confines of his undies they no longer sag as much as they used to. If I just overlay this image over the top of his balls you get his balls sticking out, which somewhat defeats the purpose.
So, I resolved to fix this:
Problem solved!
Except since this is an animation, more work is required. Because his leg moves up while he's sleeping, the undies need to be animated as well. I use OpenToonz for all my animation, it has this wonderful plastic tool that makes even me feel like an expert. All I had to do was split the image int a foreground and background image, create a "mesh" some "bones"and animate the corner of the undies that would naturally follow his leg.
Ok, great but what about from the top? Well, his junk is going to be moving around in his undies (due to his leg lift) so I have to lovingly animate the invisible junk as well.
I say "all I had to do" but there was also a complication in that I had to extend the mesh for his tail, but you don't care about that. Note that the "bones" for his undies go around the circumference. This ensures that the undies don't deform comically because I am animating a part in the middle.
Finally, the finished product (note that the slight discolouration between layers is just an artefact of the OpenToonz editor and it goes away in the final version!
