In a comment on a previous post Patreon Dubach made the following observation:

The other day I logged out during a warfront to lvl some alts then logged back in 20 mins later when the warfront was almost over and quickly finished it. Not sure if that is common knowledge or not.

This was news to me, and I could not find any mention of it elsewhere.

I had tried to afk through warfronts previously and had usually been kicked from the group. I tried Dubach's logout method and successfully managed to AFK through most of the warfront. It seems that there are two limitations on the method:

1) You are visible as disconnected in the raid panel, however no one seems to look at this or take any action in practice.

2) You have to log-in at the end of the warfront to receive credit.

It seems that normally you get kicked from a warfront because players are aware of motionless dots on the map, but the log-out method removes the possibility of detection that way.

Provided you are reasonably good at estimating when the warfront will end you do not need to participate at all as a practical matter.

This technique can probably be refined further.
