Gage became very still. It was as if his entire body had turned into stone.
And then the next second, his eyes darkened. So dark that it seemed to have transformed his entire look into that of the devil’s. A ruthlessly handsome devil. That predatory look in his eyes was so unspeakably extreme to the point that he looked so dangerous and terrifying. In fact, it was too palpable that his look and demeanor right now should really be scaring the hell out of her. Simply because something this extreme should not be normal or safe. It was as though it had suddenly turned Gage into the devil himself, a merciless predator who wanted nothing but to devour her completely without mercy and any reservation.
She knew she was supposed to at least feel uneasy or a little wary by now. She should! Simply because she knew that this seemed to be something that might really be labelled as a red flag. And yet, her heartbeat just continued beating so wildly as she kept her hands on his face. Her body clearly did not have any plans to back off, or get scared of him, much less run away from him. From this man who now looked like some breathtakingly gorgeous and deadly god of sin.
Though Eva had been suspicious of Gage’s motives ever since the first time she had met him at that bar. She had never once considered him to be a red flag - not even a potential one. He had been nothing but a complete gentleman the entire time. He had been nothing but good to her. Too good to her in fact! He was literally the best human being Eva had ever met and had in her life. She could not even compare him to anyone else that she had known in her entire life - family or not.
But since that night when she saw Gage’s real rage for the first time because of what Julian had done to her, Eva began to notice one thing. That Gage was definitely hiding something very dark and scary in him. Something that is an absolute and stark contrast to his gentleness. It was a matter that made her suspect that it is something that should serve as a warning sign to her.
To top it all, she did not know that much about him. Yes, she had met his family. Knew that he had a brother. Knew that he was the most charming and intelligent businessman she had ever had the privilege to work with. But that was it. Gage never talked about his past or talked about himself at all. There was nothing about his private person that she knew about even up till now. And then, there were also Hunter’s suspicious words regarding his own brother that were still ringing in her ears from time to time. Sometimes, those words just popped up in her mind at the weirdest of times.
All those things and him right now should really make her feel uneasy and wary. But why was it that she seemed to be consciously turning a blind eye to it? Why was it that she felt like she did not mind it the least? It was as though she did not care if he was indeed a man that might really be hiding something so dark and dangerous behind all his gentleness and those mischievous devilish smiles of his? She seemed to be becoming a person so entranced by this man that she would willingly ignore the warning signs that were directly in front of her eyes.
His palm was suddenly over the upper half portion of his face, covering his eyes. His long fingers pressed on his skin as his lips slowly curved up.
And then his deep and breathy chuckle vibrated in the silence. It was a laugh that sounded really forced and yet still sexy as hell.
“Heavens, Eva…” he said, “don’t do this to me. Please. You’re literally killing me.”
Her brows creased as she tilted her head sideways.
“I’m… I’m the one who should be telling you that, Gage.” She replied in a weak voice. She really did not know how to even react yet at this moment, but all she knew was that she needed to say something. Anything at all… to respond to him. “You… really don’t plan to tell me, aren’t you?”
