As Gage groaned and buried his face in Eva's bosom, she could feel the moist warmth of his breath puffing against her skin.
"Damn, Eva... you really are an expert in playing with my emotions," he murmured, his voice muffled by her chest.
Eva was taken aback by his words. Sputtering in indignation, she objected. "I would never do such a thing. I'm not that kind of person, Gage--"
"I know, darling…" he interrupted her. "But you're doing it unconsciously."
Eva was shocked. "Really?!" she asked in disbelief. "Then does this mean I'm actually toxic and I don't even realize it?" After saying that, Eva chewed on her lip, thinking hard if she was really behaving in such a way.
Gage chuckled, the sound rumbling against her skin. "You're not, Eva," he reassured her.
"But you just said I'm unconsciously playing with your emotions," she pointed out and pursed her lips, feeling confused.
"You do have a hold on my emotions. But that doesn't mean you're toxic," he replied, his voice softening. "I guess, only if you're aware of it yourself and yet you keep doing it on purpose to make me go crazy, Eva."
“Oh,” Eva let out a sigh of relief. "You should tell me if I start behaving like a toxic woman, Gage. I told you... you bring out the darkest side of me, so if you think I'm starting to become unreasonable, let me know." Eva was serious as she relayed her thoughts to Gage.
Gage let out a low growl, his eyes gleaming with amusement. "Why are you so cute?" he asked, reaching out to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear.
Eva was speechless once again, her heart racing as she felt his large and warm hand on her skin. And then, suddenly, she found herself doing what she did a while ago and once again, she ended up on top of him, straddling him. The only difference this time was the fact that she had actually reached out and wrapped her hand loosely around his neck. "I think you're the one playing with my emotions right now, Gage Acheron. Don’t you go making me think that I'm toxic and then turn around in the very next instant to tell me that I'm cute!"
Gage chuckled, the sound rumbling so pleasingly around her as the vibrations traveled up from where they were connected skin to skin. "But you're truly adorable right now, darling," he murmured, his eyes twinkling.
"Ugh! Stop it!" she said, feeling a blush rise to her cheeks.
"Honestly, you're the one who should stop whatever you're doing right now, Eva," Gage said, his voice low and husky. "You can’t begin to imagine the kinds of thoughts that cross my mind because of what you're doing."
Eva blinked, belatedly realizing her current position and that her hand was still wrapped around his neck. She swallowed nervously, feeling a sudden thrill of excitement run through her. "What kind of... thoughts are you having?" she asked, her voice slightly breathy due to her accelerated heartbeat.
Gage caught his lip between his teeth, his eyes darkening with desire. "That you're riding me like a dominant cowgirl," he said, his voice low and deep.
Eva's eyes widened at Gage's words, and before she could even respond to such stimulating words, he suddenly rose from the bed, breaking the tension between them. She watched as he towered over her, his eyes dark and intense.
And then, before she could even say a word, her back hit the bed, and Gage was hovering over her. "Stop tempting me, you little devil," he growled. "I told you, my body will only be yours after we get married. There would be no two ways around it."
He turned her around and spooned her, pulling her close to his body. "Now go to sleep," he said firmly. "I've had enough of your seductions tonight."
Eva bit her lip. She wanted to be naughty, to push him over the edge and make him lose control. But before she could even begin to act on her impulses, she felt the inviting draw of sleep overtake her, her eyes growing heavy with exhaustion. She let out a soft sigh, feeling her muscles begin to loosen as she sank deeper into the soft bed.
For a moment, she tried to fight off the urge to sleep, wanting to stay awake just a little while longer. But as the seconds ticked by, she realized that it was no use. Her body was too relaxed to resist the pull of slumber. Having Gage wrap his arms around her calmed her even more. Also, the knowledge that he had promised her he would not do anything that would endanger himself was an additional blanket of assurance in her mind.
And so, slowly but surely, she drifted off into a deep, peaceful sleep.
